To be in love again…

Came across Amjad Islam Amjad’s beautiful poetry and decided to translate it so, that those of you who can’t read and understand Urdu could feel this beauty too. Enjoy 🙂

Suddenly it seems good, to be drawn in,

Go on to be in love again,
but when I glance flipside, 
 a long era has gone away.

How the dust of the long journey
 has laden on our feet and heads.

You and me;
 engulfed in   our own spheres of life,
 entangled in our own eddy.

Like the two stars    that seem

Closed to each other in wilderness.

 But are millions of miles apart in 
 river of loneliness. 
How to cross this river!
 Neither you are on the brim nor I,
So, it’s better to be gripped in

Our spheres.

Gleam and shine together

Like stars.

Own up the truth of distance and bygone time.

Neither you nor I,

Can cross the river of solitude.

Though it seems charming to be

Drawn in, to be in love again!

To be in love again!

بہت اچھا بھی لگتا ہے
اچانک اس طرح دل کا دوبارہ مبتلا ہونا،
محبت آشنا ہونا،
مگر جب دیکھتا ہوں
وقت کتنا جا چکا ہے
راستوں کی دھول
قدموں اور سروں پر کس طرح سے جم چکی ہے
اور ہم تم
اپنی اپنی زندگی کے دائروں میں
اپنی اپنی گردشوں میں
اس طرح الجھے ہوۓ ہیں
جس طرح دشت فلک میں ساتھ چلتے
دو ستارے
جو بظاہر پاس لگتے ہیں
مگر ان کی رفاقت میں
کروڑوں میل کی تنہائ کا دریا بھی ہوتا ہے
یہ دریا پار کیسے ہو
نہ تم ہو اس کنارے پر
نہ ہم ہیں اس کنارے پر

سو بہتر ہے
ہم اپنے اپنے دائروں کے اس خلا میں گھومتے جائیں
ستاروں کی طرح
اک ساتھ چمکیں اور دمکیں تو سہی لیکن
یہ اپنے بیچ میں جو فاصلوں کا سرخ دیا ہے
اسے ہی تسلیم کر لیں!
کہ اس بے پل کے دریا میں
نہ تم ہی تیر سکتے ہو، نہ ہم ہی تیر سکتے ہیں!
بہت اچھا تو لگتا ہے
اچانک اس طرح دل کی محبت آشنا ہونا
دربارہ مبتلا ہونا

Original version is as below:

bahot achha bhi lagta hae
achaanak is tra dil ka dobara mubtila hona
muhabbat aashna hona

magar jab dekhta hun
waqt kitna jaa chuka hae
raaston ki dhool
qadmon aur saron par kis tra se jam chukii haen

aur hum tum
apni apni zindagi ke dayaron mei
apni apni gardishon mei
is tarha uljhe huwen haen
jis tra dasht-e-falaq mei saath chalte
do sitarey
jo bazahir saath lagte haen
magar unki rafaqat mei
karoro’n miil ki tanhai ka dariya bhi hota hae

ye dariya paar kaese ho
na tum ho us kinare par
na hum haen iss kinare par

so behtar hae
hum apne apne dariyaon ke is khala mei ghumte jaayen
sitaron ki tarha
ik saath chamke aur damke to sahi lekin
ye apne beech mei faaslon ka jo surkh dariya hae

isse tasleem hi kar len
ke is be-pul ke dariya mei
na tum hi tair sakte ho
na hum hi tair sakte hain

bahot acha toh lagta hae
achaanak is tarha dil ka muhabbat aashna hona
dobara mubtila hona!!
